It's Hard Being a 3rd Grader

After two fun, relaxing weeks off from school, Taylor had to return on Monday, and I think it was a little overwhelming for her. Schools work kids so hard these days. She is currently trying to memorize her multiplication facts, and it is coming, but slowly. (Actually, she is doing really, really well, but she is a perfectionist, so she doesn't think so.) So, Monday night, as we sat down to have family prayer, she sighed loudly and said, "Numbers just keep running through my mind. I can't stop them." (I am sure they were. We'd been practicing a lot that afternoon.) We gave her some encouraging words and then Mark asked her if she would offer our family prayer. She agreed, bowed her head, closed her eyes and began, "Three times . . . " She quickly busted out laughing. It wasn't a joke though. It had been completely by accident. Those numbers were ruling her every thought. Her laughing quickly turned to tears. She was just so overwhelmed, poor girl. We eventually did have our family prayer and got the kids tucked in bed. A good night of sleep worked it's magic, and she felt much better in the morning. I think I sometimes forget how hard it is to be a kid.

Taylor, just keep at it, it gets easier and one day you will wonder why it was so hard. I am so proud of you for working so hard on your homework you remind me of your mom, she worked really hard on her school work too, once she had to learn all the countries in Africa and there were at lot of tears but she kept at it and did really well on the test so we went to Dairy Queen after school.

Umm Dairy Queen sounds like an apt reward for Taylor also....cannot beat ice cream reward for any accomplishment. Yum, Yum, Taylor keep up the studying.....you will get it....you are such a smart girl.

Poor girl! Emma was almost crying today doing her reading. I guess life is a lot of work whether you are 5 or 55. But good for her for working so hard, it's a much happier life than avoiding hard things. Glad a good night's sleep helped!
